Burton Albion boss Gary RowettGARY Rowett will reshuffle his Burton Albion pack for today’s trip to Newport County, kick-off 3pm. The Brewers boss will bring fresh legs into his side after Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Hartlepool. Marcus Holness is expected to start in place of injured centre-half Shane Cansdell-Sherriff, while there could be a first start since September for striker Michael Symes. “The key for us is we’ve got a day less recovery than everyone else and therefore we need fresh legs,” said the Albion boss, whose side was one of only four in League Two asked to play on Saturday. “We’ve got players in the squad champing at the bit. “Ashley Hemmings hasn’t started a game yet and is desperate to. “Symesy is desperate to start a game, (Dominic) Knowlesy is desperate to start a game. I knew I’d probably have to leave him out of Monday’s game. “As it is, he just felt it a little bit more towards the end. “We’ll make changes for Monday and freshen it up with 48 hours to recover. “One or two will need a breather. Rowett was pleased Saturday’s win all but guarantees a play-off place. With York beating Oxford, it means the Brewers need just a point to guarantee their place in the top seven. As it stands, Oxford would have to win all their remaining games and Burton lose theirs to rob them of the play-offs. “That all but solidifies our play-off place, which is nice,” said Rowett. “That’s something we wanted to do. “I know mathematically there’s still a chance we still might not have enough points. “But I think we can now go and relax and see if we can try one or two things and chase third place. With Chesterfield and Scunthorpe drawing and Rochdale imploding against Southend, the gap from fifth-placed Albion to third is four points. Cards Talk: GDT vs. WASHINGTON • After making moves, making strides, and making statements during spring about improving in the field this season, the Cardinals repeatedly experienced this weekend the cost of not making the plays a better defensive club must. Two groundballs that skipped past or through infielders helped Washington fuel a rally that ended with a walk-off sacrifice fly and a 3-2 victory against the Cardinals on Sunday at Nationals Park. Neither grounder was ruled an error. Both balls should have been snared, infielders Matt Carpenter and Daniel Descalso said. The would-be out that went between Carpenter’s legs in the ninth allowed Danny Espinosa to reach base, and it was Espinosa who scored on Denard Span’s sacrifice fly for the win. The Nationals and Cardinals, two favorites to win their divisions this season, split the four-game set in the nation’s capital, and each game was decided by defense. E’s were pluribus unum, indeed. “We talk so much about the pride we’re taking in trying to be that clean defensive team, which I still know that we are,” manager Mike Matheny said. “If they weren’t so tight of games (here) it wouldn’t stand out so much. When you give extra outs to a good offense, it’s going to come back and bite you — whether it’s a walk, whether it’s a non-play, or an error. The Cardinals, who conclude this 11-game journey with a four-game series in New York that starts tonight, had cobbled together a 2-0 lead on Washington’s Stephen Strasburg and got the game where they wanted, to the bullpen. Matt Adams had two hits and scored on a double play in the second for the first run, and starter Shelby Miller delivered the second run with an RBI double in the fifth inning. Miller’s start nearly capsized under the weight of five walks and an error, but lefty Randy Choate shepherded the two-run lead to the seventh and Carlos Martinez. Four consecutive singles off the Cardinals’ hotshot setup man keyed the Nats’ rally for a 2-2 tie. Descalso entered the game to play second base in the bottom of the seventh as part of a double switch. With one out and two on, Ian Desmond lashed a grounder toward Descalso and the infielder got “caught in between” the hops. The ball got by him and instead of one out — or a dazzling double play — the Nats had one run in and the tying run at third. Espinosa tied the game with a single. “Misread the hop there,” Descalso said. “Probably should have taken an extra step to get in front of it. Play it safe. Just get an out. That’s how it usually goes. Make a few defensive mistakes and it costs you. The play went as a hit in the box score but was a key play not made in the game. The Cardinals’ are familiar with those. The club set a record last season for the fewest errors, with 75, but actions speak louder than scoring, and the Cardinals set out to improve a pedestrian defense this past winter. Errors and fielding percentage tend to be misleading statistics because they don’t tend to ding fielders for plays limited range doesn’t reach. Baseball Info Solutions, which does consider a position’s average range when grading defense, calculated the Cardinals cost themselves 39 runs on defense last season, the second-most in the National League. To address the defense, the Cardinals promoted Kolten Wong and acquired Mark Ellis, two strong gloves at second base. General manager John Mozeliak traded for center fielder Peter Bourjos, one of the best outfielders in the majors. And those moves led to Carpenter returning to third, his natural position where he’s an above-average fielder. He had three of the Cardinals’ four errors in the series and could have received another one in the ninth Sunday. Combined the teams committed eight official errors and allowed seven official unearned runs. The Cardinals exploited three Nats’ errors for an 8-0 win Thursday. A missed catch by Carpenter and errant throw by Yadier Molina on Friday cost the Cardinals. The Cardinals scored three unearned runs Saturday to win. Sunday followed the trend. Miller and Strasburg exchanged strikeouts through the first six innings of the game. Strasburg, taken first overall in 2009, struck out nine through his six innings and the Cardinals maximized their chances with two runs on five hits. Miller, taken 18 spots after Strasburg in the 2009 draft, pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings and struck out eight. But five walks bloated his pitch count and led to an early exit as his command drifted. “I was around the zone and eventually walking three in (the third inning) kind of killed my pitch count a little bit,” Miller said. “But at the end of the day you have to throw to the strike zone. Washington closer Rafael Soriano (1-0) pitched a perfect ninth to send the tie game into the bottom of the inning, where, true to the series, a play not made tilted it. Reliever Seth Maness (0-1) got the grounder he wanted from Espinosa, but his came hot and bounding through shadows before slipping between Carpenter’s legs and into left field. In the dugout, Matheny covered his head because he couldn’t see into the shadows to where the ball was actually going. He believed it was foul at first. Carpenter declined to use the afternoon shadows as cover. “That’s a play I’m expected to make,” he said. “That’s a play I expect myself to make. It ended up costing us. A single and a walk followed to load the bases with two outs. The Cardinals brought left fielder Allen Craig in to play third base and moved Carpenter up the middle for a five-guy infield. Span didn’t have to get through the crowded diamond, he just went over it for a fly ball to left that was caught but easily scored Espinosa. “There wasn’t a ton of offense, and when you don’t score a lot of runs games are usually won by pitching and defense,” Carpenter said. “The team that played the best defense pretty much won each game. CEO Mike Jackson put the big Internet shopping sites on notice last week: AutoNation is building Web products that will slash the number of leads the group's 229 stores get from AutoTrader, Cars.com, TrueCar and others. And if the third-party sites keep raising prices, he'll cut them out of the mix even quicker. In making a case to spend $50 million on AutoNation's digital storefront, Jackson laid bare the growing tension between dealers and third-party lead generators. Each year many dealers drop third-party sites, dissatisfied with perceived high prices for leads and the limited sales they produce. But, says a source at a major Internet shopping site, the majority return within six months after their market share declines or they negotiate lower prices for less advertising. AutoNation's size and resolve make this conflict different. Jackson is investing in Web sites that eventually will offer shoppers finance options, trade-ins and other features that will have the AutoNation brand and be under AutoNation's control. Robust marketing, which will aim to make the Auto- Nation brand a household name in its market areas, will boost the cost to $100 million, the company says. Todd Caputo, owner of Sun Chevrolet Inc. in Chittenango, N.Y., said he has seen no falloff in sales or leads since dropping AutoTrader in November and Cars.com a year ago and is using the savings to buy more Google ads and use more direct mail. "I haven't looked back," he said. Caputo said he was spending more than $15,000 per month combined for his AutoTrader and Cars.com subscriptions and advertising. The sites allow shoppers to view dealer inventories and channel prospects to stores. Sun Chevrolet averages about 50 new-car sales and 150 used-car sales per month. Scott Painter says 90 percent of AutoNation stores are TrueCar participants. Monthly subscriptions typically range from $2,500 to $20,000 per month. Dealerships post inventory on the sites and buy banner ads. Caputo said he had an additional beef with Cars.com: He regularly lost shoppers who were looking at his cars on the site. They were lost when they clicked to other services, such as a credit application. The credit company would get the lead and sell it to other dealers in his market, Caputo said. "Those were my customers looking at my car," Caputo said. But some dealers leave and come back. Brooke Hubler, general manager of Hubler Chevrolet, said the 10-store Hubler Automotive Group in Indianapolis dropped AutoTrader in 2012 for about a year. The group was testing whether they were getting enough "bang for the buck" from its AutoTrader expense, Hubler said. As the months went by, she said, there was a sense that some sales opportunities were being missed without AutoTrader. And the group went back to a full subscription of inventory posting and advertising as it had before the separation, she said. Hubler Chevrolet, the flagship of the group, sells about 275 new and used vehicles per month. "We're always trying to figure out the right strategy," she said. Alex Vetter, senior vice president at Cars.com, says online shopping sites are more relevant to today's tech-savvy shoppers than ever before. Sites such as Cars.com allow people to comparison-shop for vehicles and dealers in a credible place where they can look at everything from inventory and product reviews to how dealerships rate with their customers, Vetter said. "Consumers prefer shopping that way," he said. Cars.com received 33.8 million visits in March from shoppers -- a year-over-year increase of 21 percent. For dealers, the knock on the sites is that it's difficult to determine how much traffic they drive to showrooms. Many shoppers will research vehicles on, say, AutoTrader.com. Then, when the consumer decides he or she wants to visit a dealership, they'll go to Google and find a store's Web site, rather than use the shopping site to link to the dealership. So, to a dealer, it looks like the shopper came from Google, not AutoTrader.com. Meantime the shopping sites influence the sale, Vetter said. "There's a measurement gap," he said. TrueCar was singled out by Jackson as one of the vendors affected by the new AutoNation model. That was news to TrueCar Inc. CEO Scott Painter, who contends that the car-buying service offers one of the best values in the industry. Painter said 90 percent of AutoNation stores participate in TrueCar, a car-buying service that allows shoppers to lock in a guaranteed price on a vehicle from dealers who compete for the business. The company charges dealers only when a customer buys a car, Painter said. And the fee of $299 for a new car is less than half the $600 or more per car that it costs dealers in marketing to acquire a customer, he said. "We have the highest regard for AutoNation on almost every metric," Painter said. "They could tell us to stop sending introductions, but they're not doing that. The typical car buyer spends 75 percent of his or her shopping time online and a good portion of that research is on the third-party sites, said Jim Franchi, the media division president at the AutoTrader Group. AutoTrader has about 800 salespeople nationally calling on about 12,000 franchised dealerships and another 9,000 independents, he said. They offer dealers insight on how best to reach the shoppers behind 28 million unique visits monthly to AutoTrader.com and sister site KBB.com. Said Franchi: "About 48 percent of shoppers who visit a dealership Web site also visited either AutoTrader.com or KBB. Mark Rechtin contributed to this report. At the Rackham Building Friday, students pitched their start-up ideas as part of the second annual optiMize Social Innovation Showcase. OptiMize is a student organization that provides resources for those seeking to implement world-changing projects and start-ups. LSA, United Way of Washtenaw County, Innovation Blue, Central Student Government and other University affiliates provide funding for the event. In Dec. 2013, the founding group of optiMize members accepted applications from students hoping to receive funding for their social innovation ideas in the optiMize Challenge. By January 30 teams were selected from a pool of 50. After delivering pitches to a panel of judges, five teams were chosen as finalists earlier this month and received a grant of $5,000. The optiMize Showcase on Friday celebrated the journey from fuzzy ideas to fully formed projects. The finalists discussed their ideas to fellow students, who then voted for a crowd favorite to win an additional $1,000. Phil Deloria, LSA associate dean for undergraduate education, opened the program and said the University as a “place for learning” is an understatement — learning also involves approaching the world’s possibilities as a creator. Next, the five finalists presented their ideas for bettering the world through social innovation. The five teams included Go Green Technologies, Synapse, Miscellania, Blueprints for Pangaea and STARR Movement. Go Green Technologies won the $1,000 crowd vote award. This team developed a low-cost, efficient alternative to home energy systems. LSA freshmen Praveen Loganathan and Alexander Cox, Go Green Technologies’ creators, engaged with the audience to solidify their motto: “Go Blue, Stay Green. The freshmen will build their first Go Green-powered home this summer, which will use solar, wind and hydrogen energies paid for in monthly increments of $250 for 10 years. Their product reduces a home’s average carbon footprint by 80 percent. Cox created the idea as a sophomore in high school, but put it on the back burner. After he and Loganathan met in their Baits Residence Hall dorm this year, the two decided to combine their talents and bring the idea to life. “Anywhere at Michigan, people are so open and friendly that you can make a new friend, a new business partner,” Loganathan said. Loganathan, who is also a member of the Ross Preparation Initiative Learning Community, said he was initially afraid of taking the first steps towards becoming an entrepreneur and having confidence in his own abilities. “But the aspect of ‘Why not me?’ came to me saying I can do it; I have the necessary knowledge to do it,” Loganathan said. In between pitches, past finalists introduced the next team, while sharing progress reports on their own projects with the audience. After receiving funding April 2013, these innovators continued to participate in the optiMize group by mentoring the next cohort of social innovators. Business sophomore Claudia Lynn, a member of the optiMize core team, said previous teams focused on Detroit. “It’s somewhere you can actually go physically and make a difference and see the results in the moment,” Lynn added. “You can see the impact right away. However, this year, students focused on the local community and the University. Other students had a global point-of-view. For example, Blueprints for Pangaea seeks to reallocate medical supplies to low resource areas in Ghana, intending to expand to other nations. STARR Movement, whose founders attend University of Michigan ¬– Dearborn, provide mentorship to area students who are failing school. Information graduate student Tim Pituch, who is pursuing a degree in health informatics, founded optiMize with University alum Jeff Sorensen. Amy Maitner created The Purple Ribbon Project to educate UCF about the different symptoms and types of eating disorders.Among the flurry of bright sportswear and whirring of exercise machines at the Recreation and Wellness Center, gym goers may have noticed the small purple ribbons in the corners of the office windows throughout the gym. The ribbons represent the work of a UCF student who has high hopes for what could be a campus-wide movement. Advertising and public relations sophomore Amy Maitner calls her mission The Purple Ribbon Project. Maitner’s project introduces a course that can be taught to the UCF community that teaches the symptoms of eating disorders and what resources there are on campus for students who are experiencing difficulties with eating disorders. “When they are fully certified with the class, they receive a purple ribbon, which certifies their office as a safe place,” Maitner said. Scott Mauro, RWC marketing and communications manager and purple ribbon advocate, has a ribbon of his own in his office window. “That is a signal to any student who either knows somebody or who themselves is struggling with an eating disorder, they can come in and this is a safe place for them,” Mauro said. Maitner, 20, utilized a few campus resources in order to get the ball rolling with the program. She currently works closely with the Counseling and Psychological Services at UCF, Project HEAL, as well as with the RWC. Maitner is also spreading awareness of the project in partnership with CAPS. Beyond seeing her project in window sills of the gym, Maitner has high hopes for the future of the project. She is working on adding a module for upcoming freshmen to take before entering the college life – much like the alcohol awareness entrance module. Her idea for the project stemmed from the Safe Zone program, which supports the LGBTQ community at UCF. Similar to the pride allies, she would like to branch out with her project to other departments. But it’s also personal for Maitner. She doesn’t only want to help the students who are struggling with their relationship with food, she can relate to them as well. Maitner said she went through a difficult time in her freshman year with a struggle between not eating and having an exercise addiction. “I started struggling a lot last year with body image issues and it led to very dangerous habits and consequences,” Maitner said. When she decided to seek help, she said there wasn’t any awareness or support on campus for eating disorders. “That really surprised me because eating disorders affect such a large percentage of young women, and yet we are the second largest college in America, and we don’t have really any sort of awareness for it,” she said. According to nationaleatingdisorders.org, more than 20 million women and 10 million men suffer from a clinically significant eating disorder at one point in his or her life, and Maitner is trying to decrease that number with this project. The website states that 31 percent of college females suffers from eating disorders. Maitner said she hopes this program serves as a stepping stone for those students who are suffering to get the help they need to recover and improve their self esteem. “I started seeing when I started taking women studies classes how women are so often objectified and oppressed through the media and how all of the images are false and all the Photoshop,” Maitner said. “So I decided, instead of blaming all of the media for these things, I would instead change the media and make my own media. Maitner said that this program has the potential to save lives and to give suffering students the help they need. “We are hoping once we get enough media recognition, students will know that purple ribbon means that they can go there and … professors will correctly refer them to help on campus,” she said. The seven finalists for the 2013 Roger Award for the Worst Transnational Corporation Operating in Aotearoa/New Zealand were: ANZ, Chorus, IAG Insurance Group, Imperial Tobacco, Rio Tinto, Sky City Casino and Talent 2. The criteria for judging are by assessing the transnational (a corporation with 25% or more foreign ownership) that has the most negative impact in each or all of the following categories: economic dominance - monopoly, profiteering, tax dodging, cultural imperialism; people – unemployment, impact on tangata whenua, impact on women, impact on children, abuse of workers/conditions, health and safety of workers and the public; environment – environmental damage, abuse of animals; and political interference – interference in democratic processes, running an ideological crusade. Rio TintoIt won the 2011 Roger Award and was runner up in 2012, 2009 and 08. One 2013 nomination said simply and in its entirety: “Blackmailing country”. So, 2013 saw more of the same from the biggest recipient of corporate welfare – the Bluff smelter is the biggest bludger in the country. The 2011 Roger Award Judges’ Report concluded that the company has a 50 year history of “suborning, blackmailing and conning successive New Zealand governments into paying massive subsidies on the smelter’s electricity; dodging tax, and running a brilliantly effective PR machine to present a friendly, socially responsible and thoroughly greenwashed face to the media and the public”. The 2012 Judges’ Report is more succinct: “…it has us by the balls and has continued to squeeze ever since. It is corporate welfarism, but somehow doesn’t attract the same vindictiveness as the sickness beneficiary”. To quote from the 2013 Judges’ Statement by Chief Judge Wayne Hope: “Rio Tinto’s Roger Award success boils down to two factors. Firstly, its’ preferential treatment over pricing levels (in a market which it dominates) and the resulting effects on residential power bills, has had a major social impact. Any individual who relies upon the electricity grid for his or her everyday life is directly or indirectly affected. The scale of Rio Tinto’s impact on people is greater than that of any other finalist. Secondly, Rio Tinto’s political interference in the democratic process was very high, systematic and continually reinforced. In this respect it should be ranked slightly ahead of Sky City and well ahead of all other contestants. So, from a high class field, Rio Tinto takes the trophy for 2013”. And here’s the concluding paragraph from the 2013 Judges’ Report, incorporating the Financial Analysis: “Cheap electricity, research and development grants, ETS (Emissions Trading Scheme) profiteering, a $30 million cash gift from the Prime Minister on behalf of the long-suffering New Zealand public, apparently very little income tax actually paid, especially since the restructuring, and now Rio Tinto is leaving it to the Government to clean up the mess the smelter will leave behind. The Roger Award is in deserving hands”. Sky City CasinoIt was nominated by several people because of its “more pokies for convention centre” deal with the Government. One nomination referred to the “current Key government essentially selling our laws in return for Sky City building an international convention centre” and to Sky City’s “ability to profiteer from others’ misery”. It concluded: “…Sky City is attempting to lock future Governments into this dirty deal. (It) is pushing for draconian compensation provisions should a progressive Government decide that it is not OK to pay for a convention centre to be paid for by others’ misery”. “It is worth noting that our top two contestants were well ahead of the rest. All of our judges placed Sky City Casino in their top three… Sky City was a star performer in the political interference category. Any future Government with a mandate to end or modify the Sky City Convention Centre deal faces the prospect of legal action. This level of interference in the democratic process ranks alongside the machinations of Warner Brothers in 2010. Their interest in New Zealand employment law equates with Sky City’s attempt to future proof their circumvention of the electoral mandate” (Judges’ Statement by Chief Judge Wayne Hope). ChorusIt made its first appearance in the Roger Award line up of corporate villains (perhaps it should be called the chorus line). It was specifically nominated in the economic dominance category and, within that, for profiteering. To quote from the nomination: “Chorus continues the worst features of the old Telecom, from which it was split in 2011 (as a touted “solution” to those worst features). It strives to preserve a monopoly; it grossly overcharges and tries every trick in the book to keep those inflated prices, including special pleading to its backer and accomplice, the Government. This story is very far from resolved at the time of this nomination and it remains to be seen how it turns out. But it is yet another example of the corporate welfare for which this Government has become notorious – Warner Brothers, Sky City, Rio Tinto, Media Works and now Chorus. The list goes on”. “Our judging panel placed Chorus well ahead of the also-rans… our 3rd place-getter scores highly for economic dominance, impact on people, and Government interference. As the Government’s preferred broadband contractor, Chorus can set its own pricing regime… Chorus seeks to maintain its market dominance by pressuring, and colluding with, the Government at the expense of the Commerce Commission. The Commission’s regulatory role on behalf of taxpayers and consumers is thereby undermined. In sum, therefore, Chorus’s third placing is richly deserved” (Judges’ Statement by Chief Judge Wayne Hope). No Accomplice Award For 2013There is also an Accomplice Award for an organisation (not an individual) which was the worst Accomplice during the year in aiding and abetting transnational corporations in New Zealand to behave as described in the criteria. The Accomplice’s award is in addition to the Worst Transnational Corporation award and will not necessarily be awarded every year. There were several nominations for the Accomplice Award, all for the Government, mainly on general grounds. But the nomination for Chorus also nominated the Government for the Accomplice Award specifically in connection with Chorus. The judges decided not to present that Award for 2013 “because there is no competition” (as Chief Judge Wayne Hope told the organisers). But a newly minted Long Service Award was presented to the Government (represented by “John Key” and “Nick Smith”) at the April 15th Nelson event to announce the Roger winners. The Also RansANZ has been a regular finalist and won the 2009 Roger Award. In 2013 it was selected as a finalist because of profiteering, and treatment of its staff. One nomination specified “excessive pay for CEO; excessive profits; and charging excessive fees to customers”. ANZ is the first of the major banks to appear in court to defend the class action suit about excessive fees. IAG was a finalist for the second consecutive year. The reasons why are distressingly well known to anyone living in Christchurch in the last three years. The nomination is worth quoting in full: “Because instead of making thousands of Christchurch house owners feel looked after and doing their job, they quibble, penny-pinch and weasel out of their obligations. They have worn people down until they feel stressed and defeated. Despite their PR hype, they don’t ‘Love Christchurch’. They love maximising their profits and pleasing their shareholders. They are hated and despised for their chain-dragging and changing the rules in the middle of the game. Imperial Tobacco continued a long and dishonourable history of tobacco companies featuring as finalists and winners of the Roger Award. The very detailed nomination specified Imperial’s “crimes against the health and safety of its workers and the public; and endeavouring to expand its market in NZ, after the Government has committed to making the nation smokefree by 2025”. An extract from the conclusion: “Tobacco kills about 5,000 New Zealanders annually. It is the greatest preventable cause of death and illness in New Zealand… If Imperial Tobacco were genuine in regard to their corporate social responsibility, they would cease to manufacture all of their existing brands. Instead, they conducted ‘testing programmes’ where thousands of cigarettes were distributed to their employees in breach of the Smokefree Environments Act: they proudly boast a growing market share in New Zealand even after this nation’s Government has committed to making the nation Smokefree by 2025: and they cynically settle disputes with the agreement to donate thousands when their profits remain in the millions. They must be shamed”. Talent 2 made its first appearance in the Roger Award because of the complete and utter balls up that is its Novopay payroll system for long suffering teachers. Media reports routinely use words like “debacle” and “mess” in the headlines about Novopay. It has become a byword for an expensive IT failure, which has cost teachers’ millions in missed or mucked up salaries, plus it has cost taxpayers millions more as the Government has attempted to get it sorted out. The nominator specified: “monopoly” and “impact on teachers, teachers’ families, administrators and schools in general”. People’s Choice Winner: Talent 2The winners were announced at a Nelson event on April 15th (the first time the Roger Award event has been held outside of the main cities). Also announced at that event was the winner of the Roger Award online People’s Choice poll, which came to quite a different decision – the winner, by a landslide, was Talent 2. Which leads us to believe that some highly pissed off teachers must have led the voting.
